1.1 million plus Australians make Adelaide both the biggest city in the state of South Australia (redundantly named given that the name Australis translates as south in Latin) and the nation's 5th largest metropolis. Founded in 1836, Adelaide was a planned city meant to host the only free settlers from Britain. Unlike the rough and tumble criminality of Sydney, Adelaide was meant to be a staid and proper place of peace and calm. Fortunately, for traveling Sybarites, the former puritanical roots of Her Majesty's Adelaide have largely been drowned in a valley of wine. While still not a hippy epicenter like the flower child of lore over at Haight and Ashbury, Adelaide has matured into an oenephiles travel stop of choice. The local varietals are rich, the gastronomy choice, and the cultural accoutrements a pleasant complement to the palatable offerings. The Adelaide Fringe Festival is a fun time to visit, a democratic offering, the festival fetes artists both big and small, providing a chance to the newbie’s eager to raise their profile. A popular gathering, it sells 10's of thousands of tickets and provides a platform for performing arts, music, dance, and Aboriginal arts. For quieter options, try out the local railway museum and the well stocked South Australia Art Museum. Adelaide proves, that even in 'South Land' there's good reason to continue south. Quiet culture, great food and wine, plus the occasional aforementioned celebratory event, Adelaide is a deservedly popular Australian hotspot.
