Alice, like Love, Springs eternal in central Australia. Boasting a local population that has called this area home for a solid 20,000-50,000 years (but who's counting?), Alice Springs has a rather established fan base. Most of the sighted world has by now seen images of Ayer's Rock (Uluru in the native tongue) the world's most photogenic monolith. Tourists flock to Alice for Ayer's Rock, which is located around 200 miles south of the city by road. While that distance sounds like a hike, it is certainly proximate when considered against the enormous distances Australia's gigantic desert affords (A.S. is roughly 1500 miles from both Darwin to the north, and Adelaide to the south.) At 1142 feet high, this rust colored sandstone titan is Australia's most recognizable natural icon, and not just for the abundance of feldspar included therein. Alice Springs is also famous for its camel races and its large American population. (There isn't a literal connection.) The nearby satellite station, Pine Gap, actually tracks orbiting objects rather than greenly tinted distressed blue jeans, and has drawn nearly 2,000 US citizens to the Springs. With a sparse population of around 27,000 people (17% of which are of aboriginal descent) Alice Springs isn't in the running for Australia's most urban burgh. Instead, think of Alice Springs like a small-town with a big sandstone heart, the biggest little city in the antipodal world.
