| Brisbane is known locally as Brizzy, and Bris Vegas, a historic penal colony, the formerly criminal boondock has shed its Woop Woop stature and emerged as a flashy 'fun in the sun' type town. A sort of antipodial "Sin City," only without the Palms- or Paris. Blessed by a picture-perfect climate, the city is so much more than a sun freckled face. A world-class arts and culture scene has emerged in this unexpectedly progressive cosmopoliis. The city bursts with cinemas, theatres, playhouses, galleries and music halls. Pack a picnic lunch in the central botanical gardens, and observe the flora and fauna of local Aussie office workers. Down a Fourex (XXXX) the local draft, and then tell a hapless suit, "that's not a briefcase, this is a briefcase."
Take a walkabout walking tour of the creatively named, Brisbane River. The city straddles the river, much like Silverchair straddles the Billboard charts, hence, a long river walk can both help orient, and paint the pace of the town, and dually answer the angsty question, "you....what are you doing to-morrrrow....?" While trying to decide the answer that that open ended query, try a top-notch espresso in the city's competitive cafe scene. The population off Brisbane is 2 million strong, making the capital of Queensland the third biggest metropolis in Australia, but like Sydney and Melbourne, Brisbane feels distinctly smaller. Brisbane hasn't peaked, but it is certainly going to. A growing international concert venue, an emerging center of gastronomical goodies and a vibrant, hip nightlife is establishing this northern city as a force to watch. At present the state retains its stuffy royal title- Queensland, who knows, maybe soon it will be Brisland. |
