| Krikey! Welcome to Croc-ountry! Darwin is an isolated outpost on the northern shores of the titanic Australian continent. Darwin is both the 'Big Smoke' and a rural garrison at once, with a population of 100K + it is the capital and largest city of the empty Northern Territory, but also Australia's smallest capital city by a long shot. Named Darwin, after the brilliant British naturalist, the scientist himself actually never came to this lonely shore, instead it was named in his honor by Lieutenant John Stokes, a sailor aboard the HMS Beagle who spotted the harbor in 1839. (Darwin himself was on board during the famed second voyage of the Beagle, which of course embarked in 1831.) An interesting city, it has a blend of old and new, hosting the largest percentage of indigenous aboriginal residents (that's a lot of bloomin onions) and recent transfers from the tropical climes of South East Asia. Crouching on a shallow bluff overlooking the harbor, Darwin lounges on the Timor Sea, a place of tropical moods, with a sunny dry season, Darwin is populated by a youthful demographic, thanks in part to the solid military presence. This "Gateway To Asia" is very multicultural, making it one of Australia's most cosmopolitan locales, despite its meager size. Come for the shenanigans of the Darwin Festival, a collection of: Dance, Theatre, Music, Drinking, and Comedy, of both local and imported talent. Speaking of imbibing, beer lovers shouldn't miss the Beer Can Regatta, held each August, this event is a boat race held using vessels crafted exclusively of beer cans. Stick around, August is a lively month in the Northern Territory, you can also buck-a-way with the rodeo and horse races-all held in quick succession. Check out the tunes at the Darwin Festival, a musical blast of local and imported talent. Get back to nature and try out your fisherman hat with some world-class fishing, but watch out for the Saltwater Crocodiles, a ubiquitous presence in Darwin Town.
*Fun Fact: Darwin is closer to the capitals of three other countries than it is to Canberra, Australia. Those of East Timor, Papa New Guinea, and Jakarta, Indonesia...Lucky for Darwin, see Canberra...
