On the banks of the Yarra River, Melbourne lies in wait, ready to delight visitors with its old-world boulevards, art-conscious culture, and friendly citizenry. The capitol of the southeast province of Victoria, it has the feel of a 19th century European city due to its broad boulevards, gianormous parklands, and generous helping of wrought iron.  Despite city planners’ attempts to catapult it into the 21st century with super-modern architecture and shopping complexes, Melbourne retains a sleepy, otherworldly atmosphere.  Whether this is due to the Central Business District’s relative teeniness in comparison to the many sprawling and beautifully appointed residential neighborhoods or a lingering indigenous spirit, is anyone’s guess.  One thing is certain: Melbourne is a city to explore on foot, more for its small-scale culture of cafes and Victorian buildings than its tourist attractions (which are few and far-between anyway).  Melbourne has something magical to offer, especially for those willing to take it easy.
