Austria is northeast of Italy and southeast of Germany. The Austrian Empire dominated Europe from the mid-19th century until 1918 when the Empire was dissolved with the defeat of the Central Powers in WWI. It was occupied by Germany during WWII but returned to independence afterward.

Vienna (Wien) is Austria's capital and most famous city. It's popular with the backpacking set. Innsbruck and Kitzbühel are great bases for Austria's famous skiing.
