Introduction to Salzburg
Storybook Salzburg is a baroque jewel in Austria's already sparkly crown. The home of Mozart, Captain Von Trapp, and a smorgasbord of schnitzel, Salzburg bills itself as the 'stage of the world.' Besides being a mecca for performing arts, music and culture, Salzburg is a great springboard for hitting the pistes of the Tyrol, the famously close Austrian wonderland of Bed and Breakfasts, Hostels and high end hotels and ski lodges. Salzburg literally translates as 'salt castle', and while the city's fortification weren't built with that particular flavor of 'white gold,' they were certainly payed for by Salzburg's abundant salt resources. Nomen Est Omen (Name is Omen) in Salzburg, the autonym defining the source and richness of Salzburg's long and influential existence. Salt was currency, and it bought Salzburg a beautiful architectural legacy, the city delights the eyes with its stone facades and brick edifices, its arched plazas and varied sculptures. Tour the Hohenwerfen Castle and Hohensalzburg Fortress, pristine examples of this rich design. Salzburg is the capital of salzburgerland (the Austrian state of the same name) and it perches in polished repose alongside the Salzach river. Salzburg perfectly executes your European imaginings, it is a visitable fantasy place, a magical mixture of mirth and mortar. A short alpine train ride away from the Bavarian municpality of Munich, Salzburg is an easily accesible and decadent cornerstone of any Western European expedition.
