Inexpensive sausage snacks, like wieners, are fitting fare in Vienna, as they take their name from the city’s German title, Wien. Also not to be missed are slender finger sandwiches available with fish, cheese, or meat fillings from street-side vendors. A Gasthaus is an inn and a good place to seek out an authentic Viennese dinner. A Beisl (Yiddish for “little house”) is a pub; order a Seidl, a .3L beer, or an Achterl, a .1251L wine. Though the Beisl is a traditional institution of Viennese life, many of these bars are now being taken over by younger, enterprising chefs with interesting results.
Forget not the Viennese coffeehouse! All around the Ring, in venues like Café Schottenring, one can sample the richest of coffees and the thickest of tarts.
