Vienna is divided into 23 districts (Bezirke) that radiate out from a city center, sort of like in Paris. The first district is the Innenstadt, in the center. This is where most of the main sights are. The Innenstadt is surrounded by Ringstraße, or "The Ring."

Replacing the medieval city walls torn down by Franz Joseph I in the middle of the 19th century, broad boulevards run in a ring-shape around Vienna’s central park, the Prater.  This is "The Ring," or Ringstraße. Inside the circle drawn by this boulevard is the first district where you'll find such delectable sites as the State Opera House, the massive Kunst Historische Museum, a memorial to 18th century ruler Maria Theresa, and the former imperial palace of the Hapsburgs. Also nearby are the Schatzkammer, or royal treasury, the Bergkapelle, the imperial chapel, the Spanish Riding School, and The Butterfly House, a series of gorgeous greenhouses.  If you need to see it all at once, a big ferris wheel runs year-round near the center of the Prater.
