Introduction to Cameroon Edit Section - Cameroon Travel Guide - Hotels & Restaurants

Cameroon is a land of contrasts. The wide sky opens gracefully over the scenic road in the countryside and hangs heavy over the concrete skyline of its massive cities. Cameroon gains fame in the European football league for its talented players. But in 2005, it gained fame as home to the most corrupt institution on earth: the Cameroonian police force.

Cameroon is a wonderful place for tourists to explore. There are many sites of interest to visit. The nature is spectacular with volcanoes, a tropical coastline and incredible seafood served up on every street corner. I suspect one could grow practically anything in Cameroon since the scenery is so lush and tropical- and in fact, many multinational companies do come here to grow coffee, bananas and other common export fruits. Another interesting feature of the country is its diversity of cultures; not only are there essentially three colonial languages (english, french and german), there are 279 living languages that will confuse the hell out of anyone trying to learn a few words to use in greeting.

The north is home to predominantly agrarian people who live self-sufficiently in the countryside, the south operates on an invisible machine of capitalist industriousness fueled both by a class of elite consumers and a large class of urban working poor. The north is essentially separated from the south by road. The rail line that connects the two areas is unreliable. Many people fly from one end of the country to the other to avoid dealing with the vast trackless wasteland in the middle known for banditry and lawlessness. But really, the most lawless entity one has to worry about is the police force. I have traveled many places in Africa but in Cameroon, was the first time where I was cornered to pay a bribe.
