Douala can be a little intimidating for the casual traveler. First of all, it's huge. Second, it doesn't feel very safe and people warn you of muggings. However, there is also a lot happening in Douala, from nightlife to concerts to cultural happenings. Douala also has the best restaurants in the region. So if you have a little street smarts, you could even have fun here.

Yaounde may be the administrative capital of Cameroon, but Douala is the commercial capital of the country with its port on the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean. Basically, all the business and money pass through hands, and all the deals happen, in Douala.

Unfortunately... as far as charm, Douala has very little. Because of its proximity to the ocean and its location on the Woari River estuary, the place is as damp and sweaty as a turkish sauna. The river is dotted with industry: factories, ports and sewage drain their mess into the water. The city center is a mass of concrete buildings. Rich people build their palaces in gated neighborhoods where no one can trespass.

One sure way to have fun in Douala is to go down to your local Kadji burger- just look for store fronts that are painted blue. Here you can find affordable fast food and dirt cheap pints of drought Kadji beer. Kadji is probably the richest man in Cameroon because of his successful business model that serves everyone... everyone from rich to poor can afford and likes hanging out at his stores. Kadji seems like a really cool guy. He has also built a giant entertainment complex on dozens of acres outside of Douala, which makes for a disorienting place to visit for the day. The park can be accessed for just six dollars a day. You get access to swimming pools with water slides, tennis courts, football pitches, bumper cars, an arcade full of free games, a room full of trampolines and every possible variety of inflatable circus game. There are also bumper cars and a bowling alley. How?!?
