Canada is the second largest country in the world, though only densely populated in its southernmost latitudes. It was originally colonized by the French, but became a country through the unification of British colonies in the mid-nineteenth century. This multicultural history lives on, however: both English and French are Canada's official languages and both cultures - as well as a myriad of immigrant cultures - continue to characterize the nation. From the snowy, rugged peaks of the Canadian Rockies in British Columbia to the wide St. Laurence River in French-speaking (and largely separatist) Quebec, Canada spans the length of the United States, with whom it has had what might be considered one of the strongest trade partnerships in history.
