Introduction to Montreal Edit Section - Montreal Travel Guide - Hotels & Restaurants

Montreal lies at the heart of Quebec as the second-largest French-speaking city in the world. Yet it hardly feels large -- despite a thriving financial district and a few seedy areas, the many small neighborhoods, parks, outdoor markets, art centers, clean and attractive metro lines, and friendly people make the city very accessible. And it's also hardly just French-speaking. On an average stroll down the shop-lined boulevard St. Catherine or the narrower, more charming St. Denis, your chances of hearing French are, on average, pretty much equal to your chances of hearing English (as well as quite a number of other languages, as a good portion of Montrealais have immigrated from all over the world). Montreal has two major English-speaking and two major French-speaking universities, many annual festivals celebrating jazz, dance, film, comedy, and even fireworks, and hundreds upon hundreds of fabulous restaurants, bars, and cafes offering not only French but many international cuisines (Montreal's Chinatown is not to be missed, for instance). Ice hockey dominates the long, cold winters, and outdoor celebrations (even just the festoons of flowers decorating all the terrace cafes and bars) characterize the summers.
