Chile's biggest city and capital is bursting with just over 5,000,000 Chileans. Making for 1 million people more than the entire nation of New Zealand, not counting sheep. Cast in sparkling relief against the austere peaks of the Andes mountains, Santiago is one of South America's most vibrant and economically successful cities. (See also: Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires) High rises glint over manicured suburbs and ever expanding shopping spheres. Infrastructurally savvy, the city's denizens do not need to deal with the normal urban gridlock of Latin planning- thanks largely to the genius subterranean freeway system known as the Costanera Norte. A newish metro also helps to whisk the city folk to and fro with surprising levels of organization more apropos of German engineering than the bustle of South America. The city is a beautiful springboard from which to explore the promise of Chile's Andean interior. Before blasting into the piedmont, check out the clutch of museums, operas, theatres, and universities, all sprinkled around the city center's financial district.
