Introduction to China
China
is a vast nation. Despite the one-child policy, China has over a fifth of the world's population. The People's Republic of China is the current state but Chinese civilization is over 5,000 years old. The "Middle Kingdom," as they call it, was ruled by a series of dynasties up until 1912 when Sun Yat-Sen founded the Republic of China. The ROC was defeated by Mao Zedong's Communist Party and the People's Republic of China was formed in 1949. They still rule today, although economic reforms are making China look less and less communist. Chinese culture is rooted in Confucianism which emphasizes respect for elders and, really, any sort of authority and this, along with other artistic and religious elements of the culture have survived China's tumultuous 20th century.
To visit China today is to see a vast and ancient culture and a burgeoning superpower all at once. There are Buddhist temples and ancient caligraphy as well as gleaming sky-scrapers and construction cranes. It's awe-inspiring and a little confusing. In the past China has given the world Gunpowder, abacus, paper, and the compass. If China realizes its incredible economic potential in the 21st century who knows what's next.
China is now one of the most popular travel destinations in the world and is expected to replace France as world's top tourist destination in 2014.
