This major inland river port holds the dubious distinction of being the 'most bombed city in history,' a claim that locals make in reference to the savage bombardment by the Japanese Air force during WWII.  Located in central China, this abnormally hilly city is actually China's third largest with an enormous population of 31,442,300; while only 12 million live in Chongqing proper, and the remainder habitate huge swaths of farmland surrounding the city. Chongqing is more of a portal than a destination.

A tourist traveling to Chongqing comes for one reason, and that is not to explore Chiang Kai Shek's  provisional capital but instead to catch a Yangtze river cruise.  Before catching your ship wander around the varied markets of the city.  Chinese markets are always an experience that cater to each one of your senses- Chongqing's are no exception.  Unlike the two bigger cities of Beijing and Shanghai, Chongqing feels distinctly Chinese.  While the ancient and future capitals of the country stand as examples of a China carefully presented to the outside world, of what was, and what shall be.  Chongqing is not an extroverted older brother, it is an inland river port, and its makeup and character feel authentically representative of a different, more provincial China.
