Introduction to Lhasa
The Capital of Tibet, this 'City of the Gods' clings to the clouds at an amazing elevation of nearly 12,000 feet. At over a mile below, Denver, Colorado's orographic capital simply cannot compete with this kind of uber altitudity. Besides being high, Lhasa is also holy, it is the traditional home of Tibetan Buddhism, and by extension, Richard Gere. Located in a valley, the crown of Himalayan mountains that ring the city rise to 18,000 feet, little wonder that Tibet is often referred to as "The Rooftop of the World." Politically Lhasa is both the capital of Tibet and the Tibetan autonomous region of the People's Republic of China. Beijing's suzerainty over Tibet remains despite growing international protests and the exile of the Dalai Lama to India (and Apple computer commericals.) With around 250,000 people, Lhasa is a remote but beautiful city. Tourism has become the capital industry, with pilgrims and explorers alike eager to glimpse the ivory stack of towers that compose the Potala Palace. The palace is the most famous landmark in the city, it rises above the streets upon a steep hill, the walls, and stairs winding towards the gilded golden temples at the palace's apex. Lhasa is indeed a confluence of remoteness and mystery, spiritualism and exploration, both terratial and metaphysical. The Tibetan people are a smiling and peaceful lot, they welcome the curious and the devout alike, though not fully fleshed out, the infrastructure has steadily developed to support this trickle of travelers to heaven's hamlet. Appointments range from hostels to more refined hotels, book yourself a room with an expansive mood and mediate on the serenity of Lhasa.
