Introduction to Cocos Island
While the Galapagos is famous for its scuba diving scene, it is even more well known for its ancient Darwinian tortoises and the various terrestrial fauna inhabiting that Ecuadorian zoological zenith. Costa Rica's submarine response is 300 miles offshore, an uninhabited island that boasts a veritable maritime menagerie. Tours embark via boat from the mainland port of Punteranas. The island is a Costa Rican national park and it hosts a ring of salty treasures in its underwater escapes. On shore its a wild land of lush jungles and untouched waterfalls, making Cocos both a terrestrial and submarine paradise of unadulterated naturalism. People are not permitted to sleep upon, or even set up day camps on the island, thus leaving this island unmarred, more raw and more likely to be location scouted for "Jurassic Park IV The Raptor's Renaissance.*" The island's topography is truly pristine and unique, but guests come and sleep offshore for the treasure trove of sea-life lurking beneath the hulls of their ship. A series of submerged pinnacles ring the island, these lithic columns act as magnets for the deep's denizens- sea-life including: hundreds of schooling hammerheads, giant tuna, mantas, boatloads of white-tip sharks and the occasional titanic whale shark.
A trip to Costa Rica is certainly topped off by this singular natural experience.
*While Michael Crichton's novel, "Jurassic Park" took place on the fictitious Isla Nublar, Cocos was the probable inspiration for that most dangerous locale, what is more, Dreamworks actually used Coco's actual topographic signature to outline the Jurassic Park video game's geographic parameters.
