| San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica, is more likely to be your way in and out of the country than your primary destination within it. Still, it's a big city (relatively), and has what you'd like to see in an urban center -- bars, restaurants, and other nightlife, lots of international travelers, and cultural attractions like theaters and museums. For instance, a little taste of Europe in the heart of this well-established Central American city lies in the Teatro Nacional, featuring marble stairways, red velvet carpets, impressive frescoes and more, designed after the Paris Opera house and still serving as a venue for prestigious dance, opera, and orchestral performances. Learn about the history of Costa Rican colonization at the Museo Nacional, or see pre-columbian gold pieces at the Museo Oro Precolumbino; watch nightly flocks of parrots alight in plazas; meet scores of other travelers (particularly if you stay in a hostel), and eat and drink quite well. Most importantly, though, San Jose is your hub for any other destination, with fairly reliable bus service anywhere in the country or region. There are also many nearby attractions such as jungles and volcanoes (such as the hot lava-crested Volcan Arenal) accessible by bus or through organized tours and excursions. |

| andrewprice03 submitted a review on 2006-01-31 15:08... I was pretty underwhelmed by San Jose, although, to be fair, I didn't see much outside of my hotel. After coming from Tamarindo which had some local flavor and culture I was a little disappointed to find a Denny's within a block of where I was staying. I should have got out more but I'm still pretty sure visitors should get themselves to the forests and beaches ASAP. | |
