Located at a historiocultural confluence between the 'Balkan Ghosts' the Mediterranean marauders and the Central European expansionists, Croatia is an amalgam of varied traditions. Already awash in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the 20th C. witnessed a further century of tumult. The area now known as Croatia emerged from the crumbling Empire after WWI, becoming a part of Yugoslavia for over seventy years. Croatia left Yugoslavia in 1991, followed by several years of bitter fighting with the bellicose Serbs. 1998 finally saw Croatia achieve a peaceful and prosperous Serb-free sovereignty. With a landmass slightly smaller than West Virgina, Croatia is infinitely more attractive than that southern banjo burgh, both topographically and people-wise. A beautiful population of just under five million citizens enjoys the rolling plains, and emerald hillsides that spill onto Croatia's 1000 plus miles of coastline. Urban centers like Zagreb and Split are vibrant, vivacious and quickly filling with hoards of travelers taking furtive steps into this fresh, formerly communist and Balkanized conflict zone. Mortar scars are fading, the orange roofed tiles are shining and the green hills sparkle with the gleam of newly burnished silver. Forget Paris, this is Europe. Come to Croatia for the striking people, the dancebeat hip-hopping clubs, the wine-soaked cobblestones and the nautical pleasures of the Dalmatian Coast.
