Located on a geographically sheltered hill on an Adriatic spit of land known as the Marjan peninsula, Split is graced with both  natural beauty and strategic defense.   Split is the biggest city on Croatia's world famous Dalmatian coast. Located near the southwesterly edge of Croatia, Split enjoys a Mediterranean climate and the most important harbor in the former country of Yugoslavia, a fact that now aids Croatian trade and commerce. Like everything else in this region, especially areas with Mediterranean access, Split was a former home to the Roman stone smiths, and their indelible mark remains in remarkably maintained ruins. Come during the summer and attend the Split Music Festival followed by Split Summer, a theater gala. Stay near the waterfront and spend your afternoons between artsy events enjoying the local cafe culture. Wile away early morning and late afternoons walking the old cities narrow corridors and admire the orange roofed tiles glinting in the aquamarine twilight. Late nights are plentiful with myriad clubs and bars providing hospice for a variety of flavors, from martini cocktail chatter-houses to smoky subterranean wine dens.
