Darwin’s discotheque, Ecuador’s equatorial escape, the Galapagos Islands are the planet’s premier hands-off petting zoo. The islands afford visitors amazing proximity and access to evolution’s favorite eco-sphere. The animals walk, crawl and shuffle freely in their natural environment but, like good naturalists, guests are required not to touch, wrestle, snuggle or smooch any of the fauna. Expect a full menagerie including: iguanas, seals, blue footed boobies, albatross, frigates, flamingos, sea turtles, pelicans, hammerhead sharks, et al.

There are two ways to explore the islands. The first, and more popular, is on a multi-day overnight yacht cruise that island hops by night and moors for day-long excursions onto the many outlying islands. The ships range from the more intimate 16 passenger vessels, all the way up to 150+ luxury liners. The second way to visit the Galapagos is by a visit to Puerto Ayora, which is a small but functional town that also serves as a launch pad for the marine or land-based tours. The town hosts a handful of bars, restaurants and hotels, ranging from budget to deluxe accommodations and appointments. A research station is open to the public where visitors can marvel at Darwin’s famous tortoises. After a long day of indulging your inner zoologist, either as an Auduboning ornithologist or as submarining scuba diver, don't forget to unwind at the town’s only mini golf course, the H.M.S Bogey Beagle.*

*Puerto Ayora does not technically have a mini-golf course with the aforementioned name—but it should.

The Galapagos Islands are a wonderful place to travel! Despite it's historical publicity (the location that inspired Darwin's Theory of Evolution...) many have failed to discover its natural beauty as a wonderful, exotic, and unique tourist spot. Forget the Carribeans -- the Galapagos Islands are definitely coming up! I recently went on a cruise to the islands, courtesy of awesome discounts from galapagos-inc.com, and had one of the best experiences of my life. It's more of a couple our adventurous trip than a family trip, but if you'd like a truly unique place to travel, the Galapagos is definitely the place to be :)
