Introduction to Egypt Edit Section - Egypt Travel Guide

Egypt is probably most famous for the ancient civilization that took root near the banks of the fertile Nile River around 3200 BC and the monuments it left behind. There are the pyramids at Giza, the Sphinx, one of the oldest libraries at Alexandria, and the many ancient artifacts in Luxor.

Since ancient times Egypt has changed hands repeatedly, ruled in turns by Persians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and Persians again. But the Arabic language and Islam, introduced in the seventh century, have stuck and characterize Egyptian society today.

The Suez Canal, which connects the Mediterranean and Red Seas, was completed in 1869, making Egypt an important trade hub. But the country fell into debt and the British government seized control of Egypt to "protect its investments." Attempts at independence began in the 1920s but the British maintained some control until 1953 when the Egyptian Republic was declared.

Today Egypt is the sixteenth most populous country in the world and bustling, packed Cairo is the most populous country in Africa and the Middle East. Egypt still reaps the benefits of its ancient civilizations: along with oil and agriculture, tourism remains a mainstay of the economy.
