| The Ancient Egyptians were the known investors of the pre-modern world, it is from their famous papyrus stock market that we get the maxim "Sell High-- Cai-ro" As you may have already realized, that original translation was lost due to sloppy British imperialism. Regardless, a trip to Cairo is no gamble, but a guaranteed pay off. The city is bursting with history, nightlife, and bootlegged copies of the the seminal 1994 James Spader film, 'Stargate.'
In Arabic, Cairo means "triumphant," a name that references the Sphinx's devastating victory over Napoleon in which she lost her nose in his utter decimation. With a metropolitan population of over 15 million people, the Egyptian capital is the largest city in Africa. Both a modern bustling metropolis and a dusty quiet necropolis, Cairo provides all the amenities you would expect in a global capital, and so much more. The pyramids are absolutely amazing, singularly impressive and a must see for any serious traveler. Until the erection of the Eiffel Tower in 1889 the Great Pyramid at Giza remained one of the world's tallest buildings. Even more impressive than the enormity and scope of the pyramids is their staying power. To give you an idea of their longevity, consider that in the 5th Century B.C. the historian Herodotus came to Cairo, on a working vacation, to see the already 2,000 year old monuments. In Arabic, Cairo is pronounced Il Quahira, but to the locals it is known simply as Masr, which translates as Egypt. The idea that the city denotes the nation is an impressive testament to the history and compass of the ancient city. The pyramids, the Sphinx, the Hanging Church, the Virgin Mary's Tree, and the tower of Cairo are just a notable handful of Cairo's archaic attractions. Like a visit to the Louvre, don't expect to see all that Cairo has to offer on just one trip, take your time, marvel in the past, and plan your return trip.
