Introduction to Finland
Finland is a nordic country east of Norway and Sweden. The country gained indepenence in 1917 and has been cruising ever since. The capitol of Helsinki is a clean, multi-cultural metropolis filled with that famous Scandinavian design. Outside the main cities the land is sparsely populated (with a population of only five million it's one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world) flat and forested. Traveling in the summer is an incredible experience, with endless daylight through the night. In the winter it's dark at noon. Both are surreal.
Finland
is a unique place to visit for its mixture of old and new; the urban and energetic capital city of Helsinki and the wood-burning sauna by an idyllic lake in the heart of the forest. Finland is a relatively new country; independent in 1917, it had struggled for centuries to gain sovereignty from its Russian and Scandinavian neighbors. But while Finland mixes both eastern and western influences, its own culture is very old (the Finns themselves couldn’t tell you where their language originated) and is rooted deep in its forests and 190,000 lakes.
Today, Finland is striving to become the European ideal. Its social and economic policies are fair, creating an open and dynamic society. It is also very organized, you will be surprised by the efficiency and ease at which public systems, like transportation, operate. Finland regularly tops the UN index for least corrupt country in the world. Maybe it’s because the current Finnish president is a single mother?
Finnish people may seem a bit cold and reserved; some may even say, unfriendly. But these people have never seen the terraces fill up on a sunny day and have never experienced the Finnish sauna ritual where friends will wash each others’ naked backs.
