| Five million inhabitants and two million saunas: you do the math. The sauna is a very important part of Finnish culture. For Finns it's a social activity and part of a regular physical and mental health regimen.
Here's how it works: you strip naked and sit in a (usually wooden) heated room with a very hot stone in the corner. Temperatures are usually around 170˚ F. Water is thrown on the stone, creating a steam that makes the room feel even hotter. Sit back, relax and let your pores and mind be cleansed. When the heat becomes uncomfortable (or unbearable), it's often customary to take a cold shower or freezing swim.
