France lies at the heart of Western Europe as a beacon of delicious cuisine, romantic landscapes, and beautiful Old World cities. Many of Europe's most celebrated philosophers and writers -- Voltaire, Baudelaire, Sartre, Foucault, Barthes, and Derrida, to name a few -- come from Paris, and much of the world's finest wine is cultivated on French soil. From the snowy peaks of the Pyrenees to the deepest caves of Lascaux (whose walls are covered with human drawings dated at nearly 15,000 BCE) to the sandy dunes of Les Landes on the western coast, the diverse terrain couples with a diverse set of dialects and cultural practices. France is unified by a great many things, however, from music festivals to political activism to fantastic cheese, and has a wealth of beauty and experience to offer the curious traveler.

I've traveled all over France and it's a stunning country. My favorite places are probably Provence and the Pyrenees but I've also had many great ski holidays in the French Alps. One of the things that makes France so special is the beautiful and historic towns, villages and cities. You can also stay in historic buildings like village house or old farms. We've used this company a couple of times before for our self catering accommodation - Quality Villas France as this is the best deal for larger families or groups, however, there are also plenty of hotels and guest houses if you are traveling alone or as a couple.

I'd also recommend Meribel if you are thinking of skiing in France. It's a beautiful town which is connected to the Trois Vallees which is one of the biggest and best ski areas in the world. I've rented
Meribel chalets of these guys a few times www.purpleski.com.
