Introduction to Alsace
Alsace is an historically much-contested region in northeastern France punctuated by the melding of traditional German culture with a modern French flare. Cities and villages dot a lush landscape dominated by vineyards and wine cellars. A stone's throw from Germany and Switzerland, Alsace is at times more German than French -- colorful villages are dominated by German Fachwerk wood panelling, traditional Alsacish food involves bratwurst and sauerkraut, and the names of Alsace's cities and villages are almost exclusively German. Still, the younger generation of Alsace can rarely understand the German dialect of Alsasisch their grandparents speak, and French language and culture reigns supreme in the cities.
