Introduction to Paris
Ah, Paris: “the City of Light” and red-wine romance, progressively modern yet heavy with age, and as chock-full of metropolitan and multicultural hubbub as it is all things expressly French. Though one might say that Paris is Paris and not nearly so French as France is (judging from its massive non-French population and resulting urban melting pot) it still maintains both in legend and reality a deep-seated culture, history, and irresistible joie de vivre that takes both pride – and distinct joy – in its many highlights. Though the monument-filled city center that comes to everyone’s mind is relatively small and walkable, that is one of its greatest charms. While Paris is considered one of the world’s global cities, along with New York, London, and Tokyo, it nevertheless maintains its Old World feel, with as many historical sites and monuments as pigeons in the parks. Paris is one of the largest urban areas in all of Europe, with one of its largest (and oldest) metro systems, and its multiple prestigious universities have attracted scholars as reputable as St. Thomas Aquinas in the thirteenth century or Jacques Derrida in the twentieth. Art, music, fashion, and food are as deliciously cutting-edge here as in the Big Apple, but if you stop for a bit on the worn steps of the Notre Dame, or in the guillotine’s bloody home, la Place de la Concorde, you’ll see all those centuries of philosophy and revolution start to seep from the pores of its great old stones. There is a little bit of everything still left – and still to find – in one of Europe’s most beloved cities.
