Introduction to Toulouse
Toulouse is affectionately referred to as "La Ville Rose," or "the Pink City," as all of the architecture in the heart of the city is made from a rosy red brick. Even on rainy days, therefore, the city feels colorful. Though it's the fourth largest city in France (after Paris, Marseille, and Lyon), Toulouse still doesn't feel that big, with a walkable city center and just a single metro line. Another line, perpendicular to the first, is slated to be finished in 2007. A young, liberal town full of French and international students, celebrated religious buildings, active nightlife, bakeries and restaurants to drool over, museums, gardens, dance and music performances, and a droll Toulouse accent, this city is a great stop on your way south to the Mediterranean or southwest to the Pyrenees - it's only two hours from each.
