Toulouse, like most of France, is a politically active place. Buses, metros, students, and workers of all kinds regularly go on strike ("faire la greve") and regularly stage protests and marches through the streets, blasting music, tooting horns, waving flags and signs, and screaming their beliefs. It's impressive to see real democracy in action in this way. Most people you meet will be up-to-date on most political happenings in France and in the rest of the world, and have a definite opinion about them. As of 2004, Jean-Luc Moudenc is the mayor of Toulouse, and he even has a blog, where he comments and welcomes others to comment on the current events of the day.
