Toulouse, like many college towns, feels young. Young men and women on bikes and with bookbags can be found dashing around the city center during the day (or enjoying a nice cafe au lait and cigarette at one of the many terrace cafes) -- and pouring raucously out of the bars at night. Not all of these are French either, as Toulouse (with its five universities) is a welcoming spot for international students; you're likely to stumble across hordes of young people from all over Europe and from French-speaking regions in Africa, Canada, and the Carribbean. People are, in general, friendlier here, too. Unlike in Paris, where French snobbishness and aloofness lives up to its reputation, 'les Toulousains' tend to be warm and smiling, interested in meeting travelers, and much more patient with non-native French speakers.
