Oyem is a little, tranquil, forgotten town in the middle of the giant equatorial forest. I think the trip through the forest to Oyem is more spectacular than the destination itself. The sheer size of the primordial tree trunks lining the road is mind boggling. They were building a new road in 2005 that should make the trip easier by car.

Oyem has a relaxed feel, there is not much to do except walk around and meet people. Weekends may be a little more active when most men will go drink beer and eat grilled fish at the small bars that dot the town.

Oyem made headlines in 1998 when a Peace Corps volunteer was found murdered outside her home-- the investigation never uncovered the murderer, which may have been random or a crime of passion. I guess the lesson is really for women traveling through Oyem or places like it alone.
