Introduction to Germany Edit Section - Germany Travel Guide - Hotels & Restaurants

Germany is a country with an incredibly complex history. Home to geniuses like Wagner, Beethoven and countless philosophers but also to Hitler and the xenophobia of the Third Reich. Both morally and physically devastated by WWII, Germany then quickly became a proxy battleground in the Cold War.

Since the fall of the Berlin Wall Germany has bounced back with aplomb but the country is still sorting out its identity. Green Party rule is new, economic power is relatively new, and how to balance the concerns of freedom and democracy against right-wing extremism?

But the Germany of today is sorting things out admirably. Germans tend to be extremely open and friendly and, thanks to a vigorous stimulation package, some of the country's most interesting cities--Dresden and Leipzig, for example--are springing from the ashes of WWII and the GDR.
