Introduction to Dresden Edit Section - Dresden Travel Guide - Hotels & Restaurants

Dresden, the largest city in former East Germany, sits on either side of the wandering river Elbe.  One part imperial relic and two parts thriving bohemian village, Dresden has a rich and tumultuous past. Walking through the city you can see bombed out buildings that haven't been touched since WWII, communist relics from the DDR era and edifices more modern than we have here, like the new VW factory. Dresden is one of the best places to visit to see a cross-section of German history as well as its progressive, thriving, and very fun present.

Like many large German cities Dresden has "old city" (Altstadt) and "new city" (Neustadt) neighborhoods. In Dresden's case they are on opposite sides of the river. While the chronological division isn't perfect (there are lots of very new buildings in the Altstadt) the vibes of the two areas are very different. The Altstadt is definitely oriented towards older, more traditional businesses and tourist sights, while the Neustadt is more cutting-edge with boutiques, hostels, and all manner of inventive nightlife.
