| | Leipzig is easily reached from Dresden by train. A smaller, university-centered city, Leipzig pleases with its street culture and youthful exuberance, though its name dates back to 1018 (the old German word for Linden tree). Leipzig is also an interesting place to see the architectural remnants of the Soviet GDR: all but destroyed in 1945 bombings, the city was rebuilt not with an eye to restoration, but with a seemingly insatiable enthusiasm for communist block-style architecture. |
