Introduction to Leipzig
Leipzig is, along with Dresden, one of eastern Germany's biggest tourist destinations. A smaller, walkable, university-centered city, Leipzig has an exciting street culture and a youthful exuberance. Like many larger German cities Leipzig has an Altstadt (literally "old city"), which is vaguely circular and filled with old churches, museums (new and old), and bars and restaurants. It's the historical, cultural and commercial center of the city but with the university nearby it isn't stale or touristy. The cafe scene, the bars and clubs, and the museums and historical sites are all packed into this oblong Altstadt and you can easily walk it's diameter in a half-hour.
Leipzig is also an interesting place to see the architectural remnants of the Soviet GDR. Parts of the city were leveled in the 1945 bombings, and the outskirts of the city were rebuilt in the fashion of the day for eastern Germany: clunky communist behemoths that stood as symbols of industrial power and an indifference to aesthetics.
