Introduction to Munich Edit Section - Munich Travel Guide - Hotels & Restaurants

In the heart of Bavaria, Munich is both charming and cosmopolitan. The Marienplatz is the heart of the old city and the central location for tourists and visitors. The old city is pretty walkable. Munich is often called a "big village" despite its more then 1m habitants due to its feel of a relaxed village or small town rather than a busy city. Munich is the capital of the Bavaria province as is also known for its many nice "beer gardens" where visitors sit outside on large tables drink (not only beer) and eat during the summer months. It is also a tradition that visitors may bring their own food in the beer gardens and order only the drinks at the counter but those who prefer not to bring food also find a wide choice of food to buy at the spot.

Located close to the Alps, Munich is the perfect place for week-end trips to Austria and Italy, and the many smaller lakes south of Munich are definitely worth a visit, too. Often Munich is called the "most Northern Italian city" due to its many Italian restaurants (not to be mixed-up with "Italian-style restaurants") and ice cream parlors ("Eisdiele"). If you like skiing, the Alps are the best area in all of Europe with great infrastructure and après ski events on mountain huts ("Skihütten").
