Introduction to Ghana
Ghana
was the first independent African nation in 1957. Its first President, Kwame Nkrumah is remembered as a hero throughout Africa. He won the electoral seat for Accra, the capital, while sitting in a colonial jail. Once free and acting as the first Prime Minister of Ghana, he stated: “The independence of Ghana is meaningless unless it is linked up with the total liberation of the African continent.” This scared a lot of white people.
Nkrumah strived for total independence from British colonial companies and pushed economic policies that ended up being viewed as hostile by the global business world. The richest country in Africa at independence has become a Highly Indebted Poor Country (HIPC) today. Many blame international lending institutions such as the IMF. A protestor in the 1980’s marching against economic restructuring policies held a sign that said, “You may as well kill me now.”
Despite its economic problems, Ghana is rich with history, culture and traditions. With 10 government sponsored languages and 26 unofficial languages represented throughout the country, diversity is apparent. The South is populated by Christians, the North by Muslims. The Ashanti are a matriarchal lineage, while the Ewe are patriarchal. For all its diversity, Ghanaians are peaceful. While war and disputes unsettle neighbouring Ivory Coast, Togo, Burkina Faso and Nigeria, Ghanaians don’t ever loose their cool. They are known as the most welcoming and warmest people in all of Africa.

’s ecology is diverse: there is a beautiful coastline along the Gulf of Guinea, lush rainforests in the Western and Central parts of the country, cool and temperate mountains in the Eastern Volta Region and arid savannah in the north. In other words, you can surf, explore the jungle, catch butterflies or watch elephants… so many options. If you are new to the continent, Ghana is a perfect introduction to Africa!
