Introduction to Accra
Accra
is a messy, dusty and crowded African capital. At times, it is as luxurious as London. The difference between rich and poor is startling. Don’t go to Accra and spend your time only in the luxurious, you will miss the point. Hop on one of the minibuses and see where it takes you. Accra is safe, so you don't really have to worry about going to the wrong part of town.
Osu may be a good place to start exploring. It is a haven for development workers, foreign businessmen and diplomats and of course, startled tourists. You can find a real cup of espresso (not your normal powdered Nescafe), a croissant made with real butter (instead of corn meal and hot pepper), $5 fried chicken (instead of $1 fried chicken).
Accra
’s nightlife is impressive. You can dance to trance music in a room full of white people, dance to live African jazz bands with hookers from many West African countries, dance to the newest highlife song in front of giant speakers by yourself. There is always beer to be enjoyed (in 32 ounce bottles). My personal favourite is Castle Milk Stout, a thick milky dark beer.
A visit to central Accra will give you an idea of the messy and dusty side of town. You can wander Makola Market and try to haggle with the vendors… but this takes considerable skill and if you are a novice you will definitely get ripped off. You can get a shirt tailor-made in one of the many sewing shops or buy one for pennies at the “dead white man’s clothes” market (meaning, second hand). You can get lost in the old colonial section of town and find yourself in a fetish market.
