Introduction to Cape Coast Edit Section - Cape Coast Travel Guide

Cape Coast is a must on many tourist itineraries because of  its imposing slave fortress. The fort is one of the best preserved of its kind on the Gulf of Guinea. Ghana, Cape Coast at its center, was a hub for the slave trade for close to a century; some estimate that up to 80% of West African slaves originated from Ghana. A visit to the slave dungeons is heart wrenching. The tour guides will grip at your every emotion to convey the horror and senselessness of the place. The fortress also houses a museum that has some of the most insightful commentaries on the slave trade and local culture that I have seen in Africa.

Cape Coast itself is a sleepy beach town known for its resorts. The resorts are expensive, many wealthy urbanites from Accra come here to holiday. I could afford a drink at the Cape Coast Resort, but then moved back to town for three more for the same price.
