Introduction to Kumasi Edit Section - Kumasi Travel Guide

Kumasi is the commercial and cultural capital of Ghana. Banks and government offices may be based in Accra but Kumasi is the historical crossroads for trade in West Africa.

Kumasi Market is famous in West Africa, traders come from as far as Senegal and Cameroon to sell their goods here. The market is a sprawling and chaotic place. You can find tourist goods from the West Africa for reasonable prices here. For example, bogolon cloth from Mali, Toureg silver or Fulani indigo cloths. You can also wander into market sections in which you are suddenly surrounded with mountains of seasonal fruit and vegetables. For example, the tomato market is a literal sea of ripening red tomatos, a veritable feast for your eyes. Be prepared to stroll all day (the market covers a large tract of the city center and is a labyrinth of alleyways). The vendors are friendly and not pushy-- they have enough business and get by just fine without tourist money.

Kumasi is also famous as the seat of the Ashanti kingdom, a royal warrior clan that is ruled over by a Queen Mother. The Ashantis are proud people, former rulers of the territory of Ghana until the British unseated them through force. Spend a day to explore all of the funny museums and tourist sites dedicated to Ashanti culture; the military museum is especially informative.
