| How might History have played out if John Travolta had starred in Western Civilization's original production of 'Greece' instead of Pericles? Would we still have philosophy, art, and culture or just a surplus of hair waxes and hotrods? Greece isn't just a simple Mediterranean country in southern Europe; long before it joined the Westphalia system of nation-states, Greece was a civilization. And what a civilization it was- Greece begat Europe, it imagined, designed, nourished and fertilized the womb that would give birth to Western Civilization. Greece is the Alpha and the Omega of our very conception of government, science, medicine, philosophy and law. As school children we were introduced to the heroic images of valiant King Leonidas and his Spartans at Thermopylae, to the Periclean politics and high arts of Athens, and above all else, to the Olympic heights where warred a delightful cast of anthropomorphic deities more suited to a shared tenancy in Melrose Place than to their Pantheonic palaces on Olympus.
Greece is truly an amazing country, a land full of olive groves, white washed domes, azure portals, breathtaking islands and ancient artifacts. Greece provides travelers a forum to experience the foundations of Western modernity. The Peloponnesus is peppered by amazing people, stories, and traditions, just as the islands are awash in Apollonian rays, a singular sunlight that paints Greece as a breathtaking destination, the same light lit ancient Greece, a solar continuum that transcends time and transports travelers to this most gratifying locale. |
