| Unfortunately, most people's idea of this beautiful Greek isle is convoluted by the rotten, shameless-blush of the island's biggest backpacker destination. Homer would tell us that the Pink Palace is where "Rosy fingered dawn" came to die. Corfu is so much more than the home of the Pink Palace, but it often seems hard to remind people of that obvious truth. The palace begins casting its net before you even arrive in the country of Greece. Most of Corfu's travel traffic arrives from Italy. Indeed, in the ancient Roman Port city of Brindisi, Italy- you can begin to appreciate what kind of experience you are going to have when you arrive in Corfu. As you approach the ferry ticket office, you will notice a slew of signs- some toting, some dismissing Corfu's Pink Palace. Like other backpacker destinations, the Pink Palace is not for everyone.
The Pink Palace is a lifestyle choice, nay, it is a test of your very humanity. It asks
you, are you going to be one of those people that still claims that the hover-boards in 'Back to the Future II' really did exist, or will you join the discerning crowd that realizes a special effect when you see one? Are you going to be a good, and thoughtful person, or, are you just a corporeal sack of pure evil? Like Satan, the Pink Palace has both friends and enemies. If, for some reason you are anxious to reclaim your visor-wearing inner frat boy, if you desperately avoid ocean views- for a tepid hot tub set in a cracked concrete courtyard boxed in by 4 sun-bleached pink walls, then- by all means, head to the Palace. If you want 10 Euro/hour internet that doesn't work, or, if you can't wait to stroll in a toga sheet along some beer-stained astro turf, then please- get thine self to the double P. If, however, you have any intention of seeing a beautiful Greek isle, a jewel in the Adriatic, a place full of culture and beauty, than please, for the love of mankind, please stay anywhere but the Pink Palace. |
