Greenland should leave the emerald nomenclature to Ireland.  Despite its verdant sounding title, Greenland is covered by a whopping 81% of icecaps.  Originally a viking settlement of Erik The Red (real estate propaganda was alive and well in medieval times as well, Greenland?  Sounds nice doesn't it?)  Greenland became a part of Denmark during the famed age of Danish colonization which occurred in the 18th C.  It was granted self governing independence (though is still administered under the Danish hegemon) in 1979, and today the world's largest island is far from the world's largest tourist draw.  Perhaps it is the sparse 19% of land that isn't coated in frozen sheets of water, perhaps it is the un-balmy climes between the Arctic Oceans and the North Atlantic, or maybe it is geographic location, G-Land is even further north than Canada.  At over 3 times the size of Texas, this is a truly gigantic island, and one with a variety of flora (counting pogonip) and fauna (whales, sea birds, arctic foxes, seals etc.)

In good news, with over 44K kilometers of coastline, it is certainly easier to score some beach-front property here than in say, Tahoe.  Climate-wise, you've got your arctic and your subarctic temperatures, which translates to coldish summers and 'I guess I should have layered more' frigid winters.  Farming hasn't caught on, with 0% arable land and 0% permanent crops making agrarian vocations a difficult chestnut to crack.  With 56K+ people, Greenland must be the least populated inhabited island per square mile on the planet.  A 20,000+ per capita GDP makes  Greenland, while relatively empty, also relatively richer than most other global islands.  Infrastructurally quirky, Greenland has small roads within its towns but has zero roads connecting seperate population centers.  Inter-town movement takes place either by sea or by air.  If you are looking for absolute peace and quiet and a plethora of space, try the northeast of the country, the world's largest national park, this area encompasses more land than both England and France combined.  If a big night in the big city is more your speed, try the metropolis that is Nuuk, (Godthab) this village-town has 13,000 residents- and the Greenland National Museum and Archives (pack your own redbull.)
