Introduction to Budapest Edit Section - Budapest Travel Guide - Hotels & Restaurants

Budapest was originally two villages bisected by the Danube river.  The towns of Buda (west bank) and Pest (east bank) straddled the riverbanks, growing independently.  Though separated by the lapping waters, the two burgs were united through a shared culture, trade, and language.  In 1873 with the first permanent bridge, the two cities finally became an officially unified city.  Settled around the natural protection afforded by Gellert Hill and the ease of river crossing at the water's edge, Budapest was a Celtic outpost as far back as the 3rd century B.C.E.  The Romans had a hand in fortifying the city's foundation with the establishment of the trading city of Aquincum around 89 AD.  Occupied variously by the Magyars and the Ottomans, the city retains an Asiatic veil over its western cornerstones. A latecomer to the modernization of Western Europe, a twilight 19th C. compromise with the suzerain of Austria introduced a rapid and steady industrialization into Budapest, which today makes it such a modern and brilliantly incorporated world capital.  Eager visitors enjoy relaxing spa treatments in the beautifully preserved Turkish Baths.  Tours of the ornate Mathias Church and the Royal Castle are a centerpiece of a stay in this incredibly diverse, pristine and bustling ancient city.  Enjoy the food, drink and sounds in this former soviet capital, discover what all the buzz is about in this eastern cousin of Prague.  Budapest is still a relatively undervisited city, but go now, the secret won't last for too much longer.
