With a population of over a billion people and the fourth largest economy in the world (in terms of purchasing power parity), India is a huge nation. It was a British colony until 1947, when it gained its independence. India had an easier time as a fledgling independent nation than did many former African colonies, largely due to the incorporation of Indians into the colonial bureaucracy and the well-established educational systems there.

India's kaleidoscopic population is characterized by it's multitudinous, cross-cutting identities. Every imaginable combination of religious sect, ethnicity, caste, and language occurs here. As a result the population is somewhat fractured but incredibly diverse and culturally rich.
