| If you stay in the main tourist section of Bali then you will be around Kuta beach. It is perhaps the most well known, only because most foreigners don't like to travel away from their resort. Although its a nice beach, being parallel to major hotels and restaurants has tarnished its beauty. You will often come across garbage and will always be harasses by vendors. The best thing about Kuta is the sunset. Every evening crowds of both locals and visitors flock to the seaside in admiration of the truly stunning site. Some meditate, some take pictures, others drink, all are happy to be there.
A hidden jewel of Bali, known only to locals and smart surfers, is Dreamland. It is about a 45 minute drive outside of Kuta. Ask for directions. Then rent a car or motorcycle and head out, but don't forget to pick up refreshments beforehand. Eventually you will traverse a rather interesting dirt road, navigate accordingly so you don't tip over. White sand and warm water await you. Dreamland is rarely occupied by more than a handful of people. There is an adjacent beach on the other side of the cove, it is also a treasure.
Unlike Dreamland it is protected by the shoreline. There are absolutely no waves, you can float in the water for hours and barely move. Paradise.
There are many other amazing beaches that you can easily get directed to. All you need is the impetus to leave Kuta and you'll be glad you did.
