| A Portrait of the Artist: Dublin is a Joycean odyssey. The home of Irish wit, art, culture, beer and Bono; grab your used student bookstore copy of Ulysses, the Dubliners and your cliff notes, pack your liver, and head for the emerald capital of Erin. Located at the mouth of the river Liffey, Dublin is both a scholar and a gentlemen. Not always so erudite, Dublin was founded with a more rambunctious Viking past. These early settlers were rascally barbarians who fashioned it as a way station and settlement; regardless, it has been Ireland's capital since at least the middle ages. A "European capital of culture" Dublin is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city of art, music, and museums, as well as lively pubs, clubs, and arenas; Ireland's capital truly has a venue and a flavor to suit every taste. Take a tour of the Guinness Brewery at famous St. James Gate, enjoy the bombastic "Guinness is Good for You! Guinness Mill Make You Stronger!" marketing tactics of yesteryear in the Brew house museum, then settle down for a requisite pint of the beloved black cream. Get lost in the Bohemian hipsterville of Temple Bar, then spend a day recuperating with some of the masters of literature, bring your spectacles for a literary whirlwind including: Jonathan Swift, Bram Stoker, Oscar Wilde, William Butler Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, Samuel Beckett and as already mentioned, James Joyce. If all of those blokes leave you missing a feminine sensibility, track down Molly Malone, she's perennially wandering the streets with her wheelbarrow. |
