The tip of Italy's boot, Calabria is perhaps the least-known region of Italy, so it is interesting that it is the ancestral home of the Itali, a small tribe from which the entire peninsula takes its name.

Because of its relative obscurity, Calabria is a great destination for those looking to deviate from a more typical Italian vacation. Of particular note are Reggio di Calabria, Calabria's largest city and just a stone's throw across the Strait of Messina from Sicily. Reggio's pleasant atmosphere, notable archeological collections, and fine Mediterranean beaches make a day or two in Reggio an ideal transition between Sicily and the mainland.

Calabria is also home to the Sila Massif, the southern end of the nation-spanning Apennine mountain range, an undertouristed oasis for those looking for a mountain getaway, in either the summer or winter. Travelers will want to make charming Camigliatello their base.

Cosenza has featured prominently in Italy's history since its beginnings as the capital of the Brutii people, one of many tribes that fell to the wayside under the domination of Rome. In Roman times, Cosenza served as an important stop on the Via Populia, the Empire's main road to Sicily. Though sacked by the Visigoth's, Cosenza survived to become the Norman capital, again reaching its ancient prominence. Since Norman times, however, Cosenza has wained in importance, and today is a picturesque small city worth a visit for its beautiful Centro Storico ("Historical Center", the old town) and its Norman castle.
